Most visitors to Vietnam need a visa to enter the country. Visas are exempted for the citizens of the countries, which have signed a bilateral or unilateral visa exemption agreement with Vietnam; tourist visa may be valid for 15 to 30 days.
Customs procedures in Vietnam are quick and simple. To enter and exit Vietnam, visitors are required to fulfill the entrance and exit procedures in the form (in Vietnamese or in English languages).
Vietnamese, the national language is tonal and monosyllabic, which means the meanings of the word change according to the pitch they are pronounced at.
The currency of Vietnam is the dong (VND). Notes are available in paper denominations of 500,000; 200,000; 100,000; 50,000; 20,000; 10,000; 5,000; 1,000; 500; 200 and 100 VND, and also in metal denomination of 5,000; 2,000; 1,000; 500; 200 d.
Communication fees in Vietnam are quite high but impeccable. You can use pre-paid card phone services for your hand phone, the SIM card costs around 15 US$. Prepaid card costs 100,000; 300,000 and 500,000 VND.
Souvenirs to look out for in Vietnam include lacquer ware, silk, conical hats, woodcarvings, hill tribe fabrics and handicrafts, embroidery, marble, ceramics, silver jewelry, antique watches and paintings.
The national electricity system is 220 volts. Connections are either a round two-pin plug or a flat two-pin plug.
